Health Education

Complete health care: that's our promise to this community. It's a promise you can count on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - and one that's based on our unique philosophy that the most efficient and effective health care is preventive, then curative and therapeutic. Last year, more than 12,000 people took advantage of this opportunity.

The "arm" that delivers South Nassau's preventive medicine is its Community Medicine Department. Last year, more than 12,000 people took advantage of their comprehensive range of services and programs.

CPR Training

A designated American Heart Association (AHA) Community Training Center, we offer AHA courses in CPR including: Basic Life Support (BLS), Friends & Family, Heart Saver AED, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Renewals. These classes are held regularly at the Hospital and throughout the community.

Health Events & Screenings

Our year-round schedule of health events includes a program of free lectures which focus on a variety of health topics - including "Stress, Chronic Disease and the Immune System" and "What's the Skinny on Cholesterol and Trans Fatty Acids" - for all community members. We also sponsor educational conferences on cardiac health, Parkinson's disease and diabetes, Lamaze programs, smoking cessation and weight control programs, as well as Teddy Bear clinics.

Supplementing our educational efforts, we also coordinate free:

  • blood pressure screenings
  • flu shots for senior citizens
  • pneumonia vaccinations
  • prostate and skin cancer screenings in cooperation with the American Cancer Society

To help you prepare for pregnancy, childbirth - and beyond - we also offer a Parent Child Education program through our Maternity Services department.
